Vitamin D supplementation may be needed in children with HIV, according to a study published in the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Journal.

Allison Ross Eckard, MD, and colleagues were interested in vitamin D status among HIV infected children and risk of cardiovascular disease. The authors examined vitamin D levels, inflammation, metabolic markers, and cIMT in 30 HIV infected children and 31 healthy controls. Measured cIMT is used as an independent predictor of future cardiovascular events, common in people with HIV.

After adjusting for season, sex, and race, there was no significant difference between vitamin D levels in the HIV and control group. Seventy-two percent and 87% of the HIV infected participants and healthy controls, respectively, were vitamin D deficient (<20 ng/ml). Vitamin D status was negatively correlated with BMI, insulin resistance, HIV duration and the use of HIV and AIDS treatments.

“In contrast to similar studies in HIV-infected adults, we did not detect any significant associations between vitamin D status and cIMT with the HIV-infected group. However, there were notable significant correlations between low vitamin D and several well-established CVD risk factors, includinginsulin resistance and higher BMI.”

The authors call for large randomized controlled trials to determine if vitamin D supplementation has a positive impact on cardiovascular disease risk of people with HIV.

“A lot of interest has been placed on vitamin D in the general population because of the multiple health benefits of vitamin D. Investigating vitamin D in patients with HIV is even more crucial, “ Corresponding author Grace McComsey, MD, explains. “Not only do adults and children living with HIV have an astounding high rate of vitamin D deficiency, but they also have alteredimmune system, heightened chronic inflammation and high risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Vitamin D presents a cost effective and safe mean to potentially modify each of these abnormalities and risks.”
